UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sixty Years of UN Peacekeeping

On the occasion of his first visit to Ireland since succeeding Kofi Annan in 2007, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon gave a keynote address on the topic of Sixty Years of UN peacekeeping.


Ban Ki-moon is the eighth UN Secretary-General, having succeeded Kofi Annan on 1 January 2007. At the time of his election, Mr Ban was the Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade. His long tenure with the Ministry included postings in New Delhi, Washington D.C., and Vienna. As Minister he served as Foreign Policy Adviser to the President, Chief National Security Adviser to the President, Deputy Minister for Policy Planning and Director-General of American Affairs. In 1999, he worked as chairman of the preparatory commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organisation while he served as South Korean ambassador to Austria.


Mr Ban studied international relations and graduated from the Seoul National University in 1970. In 1975, he started as a staff member of the UN division of the South Korean Home Office. In 1985, he earned a master's degree in public administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
